When I was in fifth grade, I experienced something that made me realize that what you say and do really do matter to people. In my class, there was this one boy who was different in the way he talked and the way he thought, so everyone thought he was "weird." We excluded him from our activities and also made fun of him on a daily basis, calling him names and making fun of his appearance. (It's hard to admit, but yes I was a horrible person. It's probably one of the most shameful things I have every done, and I still feel bad till this day.) But while we were laughing, his heart was breaking inside. We later found out that he thought about committing suicide, telling others during lunch that this would be his last meal and the world was meaningless since nobody liked him. When I heard this, I was stunned. I felt shame and guilt, but, most of all, I felt like I had almost become a murder. I mean, my words almost made someone take their own life. I was one of the reasons why someone wanted to leave this world. I still feel disgusted about myself and what I did to that boy. But I now know that I should use words to empower people, and not destroy them. I should help a person realize that staying in this world is a good thing.
Sadly, people nowadays are even more prone to this kind of teasing and bullying with the internet and social media. Scrolling through comments on Youtube, people just seem to say whatever they want without thinking twice of what they're words can actually do. It doesn't matter if you're hiding behind a screen or if you say it directly to someone's face, there are some words that you should never say to a person, ever. What's so superior about making someone feel bad about themselves? Words should build someone up, not tear someone down. Your words and actions should save a life, not end one.
And for those of you who are being teased or bullied, stay strong. And get help if you need. Remember that getting help is not a sign of weakness; it shows that you're strong enough to want to stop people from tearing you down.
So today, try saying or doing something kind for someone. Don't underestimate what a smile or the words "Have a great day!" can do for someone. Something as simple as that can lift a person up.
Have an awesome day you guys! ^_^
